Off-shore Tube Microphone ‘E’ Modification (Apex 460 and similar) $349
*introductory special
The ‘E’ (electronic) modification is for those seeking best results possible on a tight budget. It leaves the stock capsule and transformer intact as well as the stock connectors; aside from that, it is the same modification as the 'C' mod. It is a complete rebuild of mic and psu.
This includes the replacement of every capacitor in the microphone and power supply , every resistor in the microphone, the Zener diodes in the power supply are replaced with an appropriate resistor for voltage regulation, the addition of an EQ capacitor with a switch in the microphone*, a new ceramic fuse in the power supply, new solid-core wire where warranted, a new Electroharmonix 12AY7 tube, removal of layers of mesh from the headbasket, and removal of unnecessary components. Should you also change your 7 pin cable? Probably not... see here for why.
This will be a drastically different microphone from what was built. It will sound lovely on vocals, guitar, piano (especially in pairs), horns, acoustic bass and pretty much any other instrument. Check it out on the samples page.
*The switched EQ capacitor allows for you to have a great mellow sounding mic for vocals and most other sources, but reserves you the right to have the stock capsule's added brightness at your disposal if you need to brighten up a source such as a dull sounding acoustic guitar or a singer that needs some added air.
